The year 1981 was a great year for Ronald Reagan, and apparently for some lucky pop rock artists. The gravely voice of Kim Carnes took the top spot of 1981 with the release of her smash hit “Bette Davis Eyes”. The soulful and poppy Diana Ross came in at the number two position with her song “Endless Love”. Number three on the 1981 pop charts was held by country pop star Kenny Rogers.
It might seem odd by today’s standards to have such different types of music in the most popular rock spots, but that was what 80′s songs were all about. Superstar John Lennon held the fourth song on the pop charts with “Starting Over”, while Rick Springfield rounded out the fifth position with his song “Jessie’s Girl”.
