Gentoo versus FreeBSD revisited

In the world of operating systems, there are those who demand the ultimate in performance from their choice. And the only way to achieve the ultimate in performance is to do it your self, from scratch.
Basically, what that means is building everything from source code.
Building everything from source code, however, is not something that just anyone can do. The two main contenders for the title of source-based operating systemsare FreeBSD and Gentoo. Gentoo is a distribution of Linux; FreeBSD is, well, FreeBSD.
The Gentoo way of going about things requires you to know about, understand, keep track of “use flags“. FreeBSD does that part differently by using defaults unless you specify otherwise, and asking you to configure in a semi-graphical environment.
Personall, I like the way FreeBSD does things much better.
